Katrina- I'll only answer the part I have some knowledge of- in editing old family letters and diaries for an upcoming family history, I found my ggg grandmothers comments on the monthly sanitary problem interesting- she mentioned "a gause" and using rags in between the gause. In a later entry she complains about washing her "ladys linens". She was born in 1791 and she died after 1848 and before 1851. The dates I refer to in the diary/letters are in 1821 and 1823. I know this is late Regency and it is the US, but this is what I have. She lived on a southern upcountry plantation and I have wondered if the "gause" was tobacco cloth or whatever. Hope this gives some help. Liz
