I want to know about the possibility of a forced marriage in the Regency period. Could a man marry a woman whose father had given her to him? Could a clergyman be coerced by threat and bribe to perform a ceremony with a bride who is present only by virtue of restraint?
In Samuel Richardson's time, girls seem to be completely under the control of their fathers, but whethter that was the case in the Regency, I don't know for sure. The country you lived in would make a difference, I think.
