A special license was expensive but it entitled the couple to marry immediately, instead of having to wait while the banns were announced on three consecutive Sundays. They could also chose the place where they married and what time they married. Couples who had their banns announced had to get married between 8am and 12pm. I got my info from The Regency Companion.
