] In Persuasion, if Miss Carteret is Lady Dalrymple's daughter, why is she not Miss Dalrymple??

Depends on the Dalrymple's rank. You have to be an earl or higher's daughter to merit the courtesy title of "lady" in your own right. For example, Lady Diana Spencer's father is an earl so Princess Di was called Lady Diana before she married and her eldest brother is Viscount something or another.

Miss Carteret would be an "Hon" now. I don't remember when this usage began.
