The only other input that I can add aside from agreeing heartily with the other posts, is that the English Navy was quite humbled in that war. The USS Constitution (which just sailed again 2 weeks ago for the first time in 160 years--what a sight that was!) remained undefeated and the US Navy in general lost far fewer casualties than the Royal Navy. The army was a different story altogether. But in answer to your question, I think the only people who'd be *really* concerned (other than the politicians and perhaps merchants)would be the Captain Wentworths and Admiral (and Mrs.) Crofts--no doubt the landed gentry might discuss it over dinner or make sly remarks about "that troublesome Colony" but I doubt it would extend beyond that.
As an aside, there is a great book (alas, I returned it w/o reading it wholly) called The American Revolution through British Eyes--I don't know the author or ISBN, but I'm sure it's available elsewhere.

I look forward to reading of your "Colonist's" visit to Pemberley.
