In response to Tenants, Servants, and Pemberley, written by Kathy K on September 13, 1998 at 01:08:03

To L and T index ] Do any of you eminently-more knowledge people know (or want to guess/estimate) how many tenant families would have lived on an estate such as Pemberley. Also, how many servants would have it have taken to keep such a home running?

By "estate" do you mean the Park, which Austen tells us is "quite ten miles round" or are you assuming that there is more to it than that? Do you want to include all the villages where the Darcys had an interest, such as Kympton, which may or may not be part of the Park? In the household servants, do you want all those who come in from Lambton,or "the village" or only the ones that physically live in the house?

By "tenant families" were you thinking of farmers and labourers only, or were you wanting an idea of how many would be in other occupations, and may well be tenants of the Darcys but didn't have any kind of acreage at all?
