In Our Tempestous Days it says that the family decided to hide the child birth from the king, who wanted to believe her daughers were proper young princesses. It also says that the father was an ungly dwarfish man thirty three years her senior.
As regards Cumberland, it seems that there were hints but not proof of his having made improper sexual advances to Sophia (of whom people said he was uncommonly fond), and that the Regent believed him capable of doing so. Anyway he was also suspected of being either bisexual or homosexual
