My first guess was a shawl too, but could it be the train of the lady being..ah...indignantly fighting off those hands? It looks like the same material and the same trim (but these things could match and perhaps the train too long...though they did have long trains), at any rate, I would suppose he is trying to use it as you said, to encourage the blindfolded one to think him a female. But I wonder how far the blindfolded one would go to discover that the person in question was a man! He seems to be having a difficult time with the one he is sitting on, I mean, by this time, surely he can distinguish her! But he is still wearing that convenient blank expression, or rather, trying to hold it!
