In response to Illegitimate child, written by Constanza on September 07, 1998 at 15:51:59
] I read somewhere that one of the Regent's sisters gave birth to an illegitimate child. Does anybody have more information?
Yes,I believe this was Princess Sophia, the fifth of the six daughters of George III, with Amelia being the youngest. According to Elizabeth Longford's research, Sophia had a child by a courtier named General Garth. I think this was after her father's death, but am not certain. George IV's political enemies put it about that the child was the result of Sophia's incest with another of her brothers, the duke of Cumberland, but this was not true. Wellington, as George IV's executor, scotched the rumor. As to the child, I know nothing more. Truth? Or fiction?
