] Many, many songs from Appalachia actually have their roots in one of the European Folk traditions.
Caroline, that reminds me of an island off the coast here in Virginia called Tangier. It's very remote-accessible only by ferry, and the islanders still speak a kind of seventeenth century English. Although as their interaction with the mainland has increased, this is fading :( Still, features have ben done on them as their speech seems so different to the rest of us.
