In response to Appalachia and the old world, written by Caroline on September 04, 1998 at 21:57:47
Thanks for verifying the Appalachia/UK link for me Caroline. I had read in Sharyn McCrumb's book, The Hangmans Beutiful Daughter that George Washington told his soldiers, "Don't shoot the Scotsmen. After the war, they'll stay." I should know more about this topic than I do, considering my gene pool.
BTW, here's another version of the song:Fair And Tender Ladies
Traditional
Come all you fair and tender ladies
Take warning how you court young men
They're like a star on a cloudy morning
First they'll appear and then they're goneThey'll tell to you some loving story
They'll swear to you that their love is true
Straight away they'll go and they'll court some other
And that's the love they have for youOh don't you remember our days of courting
You told me then that you loved me best
You could make me believe by the fall of your arm
That the sun rose in the westI wish I was some little sparrow
And I had wings and I could fly
Oh I'd fly right back to my false true lover
And while he's talking I'd be nighBut I am not some little sparrow
And I've no wings and I can't fly
So I'll stay right here in my grief and sorrow
And let my troubles pass me by
