At a ball, married males and females were expected to dance with other people and it was actually quite rude for a man to monopolize his wife and vice-verse. Unmarried ladies could dance with whomever they wished, married or no, so long as they did not dance with one more than three times at the same ball, that is, with a man married or not. And then, of course, unmarried women were discouraged from dancing with rascals but they were allowed to dance wih them so long as not more than three times. And then, depending upon the date, you have your no-waltz rules as well.
