Dancing etiquette

Would it just be unthinkable for a married man to ask the wife of another man to dance? If it was acceptable, but only marginally, would the lady be able to demure without her refusal being considered rude as well? The books I've scanned make it sound like at least the single women were expected to dance whenever asked.
Darcy would have danced with Louisa at the Meryton assembly, but she was engaged at present. Mr. Elton(?) could have danced with the single woman whose name I forget. But what about married to married?
Thanks for any guidance on this one.
