In response to Kitchen in the basement?, written by SuzanneR on September 03, 1998 at 12:41:13
] ] My understanding is the "first floor" is actually up a flight of stairs from the entry/street level and that the dining room and kitchen were on the entry level, hence references to "going down to dinner." The dining room was on the same level as the kitchen as opposed to with the other areas of entertainment so the food might have the best chance of arriving while still warm. Is this consistent with your info?
] Hi Emily:
] I believe you're right except that I thought the kitchen was in the basement, at least in the usual townhouses. These houses were tall and narrow with four (is that right?) rooms per floor.
