Talking and Counting

It's not difficult to talk during a country dance, provided that you know what you're doing. If not, counting the music and remembering the steps become paramount. However, as folks in this time would know the dances inside and out conversations were possible. Music at a small assembly would be provided by several musicians, perhaps a violinist and a piano player. Not like the dances we go to today where it's impossible to hear yourself think.
