microbes and germs

Although it wasn't until Pasteur's day that things realy moved forward, they did have microscopes and were aware of 'animalcules' that lived in clean and dirty water, and some were beginning to make the connection.I've seen a description about looking down a microscope in a book that's now back in my library...I'll see if I can find it, if anyone's interested.
