] This sounds oddly familiar, though. As if I've read something like this happening in some other novel. Jane Eyre, perhaps?


This may (and probably does) occur in several novels, but in the Little House novels when Mary gets scarlet fever I believe there is a reference to having to cut off her hair.

In Jane Eyre the girls' hair is cut off, but because of potential vanity, not fever.
