] ] The head shaving sounds familiar to me too, but I can't place it. I keep thinking it's a children's story in which the little girl had to have her head shaved, and then her hair grows back in delightful curls. I wish I could remember.
There's this book called "Again Katy (or Katie)" or something like that (you see, I have it in Spanish and it's called "De nuevo Katie") which is a sequel to "Katie" and "Katie goes to School". In the book Katie (or Katy} is travelling in Europe as a companion of a widow and her daughter. The daughter catchs a fever (tiphus?) while in Italy and her hair is shaved and then grows back in little curls. As she is a little reluctant to have her hair shaved, her doll's hair is cut as well. Unfortunately I cannot remember the author's name... Is that the book?
What about Little Women? Wasn't Beth's hair cut there also?
