There are several postings on bleeding in the archives. The basic rationale behind the practise was the belief that the body was ruled by "Humours." This grew out of the Aristotlian view that the world was made up of four elements which in turn could be defined as being hot/cold, and wet/dry. Blood was hot and wet. Fevers are accompanied by a rise in body tempature, sweeting, etc. The patient obviously had too much of the hot/wet humour, which could be reduced by removing something hot/wet from the body. Hence bleeding. There is a longer version of this in the archives.
