Northanger Abbey Query

In the movie there is a scene where everyone goes into a room full of water. Some have plates with different things on them that hang from a cord around there neck. What is this room, what is it's purpose, and what do the plates have on them? Why do only some of the people have plates around their necks? Why are there more women than men? Also, I noticed that Catherine and Mrs. Allen have different colored "dresses" on than everyone else - was that just to make sure we knew which ones were them? I've watched the movie close to a dozen times in the last month or two and each time this scene puzzles me. Is this the pump room mentioned in the book? Thanks!
