That is the question!
technically, at the tail end if the 18c and in the early 19c, it was acceptable not to wear gloves. This was the period when gloves just began to be de rigour. And so if you look at fashion plates of the period, many of the models are not wearing gloves at times when only slightly later it would have been most appropriate. And just as many are wearing gloves. With full-dress, I imagine it was universally thought important to wear them, even during this early period.
