] "Stays" was just the word more commonly used in English before the mid-19th century; I prefer to use the word "Stays" when speaking of the Regency period, because the word "corset" has the wrong associations (it tends to bring to mind a stereotypical image of an 1890's model, or whatever). Yes, I think some of the Regency "short" stays more or less resembled a bra, but I'm not really sure quite how exact the resemblance was.
