Magistrates

The word magistrate describes a judicial function, a JP sitting in court is one type of magistrate, and there are others. A single JP could do certain things out of court--commit you to the lockup for example, and could sit alone for some magisterial functions but a panel was more usual for serious business I think, then as now.
