I have not reviewed the scene you are speaking of, and so I cannot say of what precisely they aim to do with their reeds or what occassion it might be for. But amature furniture making was a lady's frequent pastime. Just as she might decorate a hat or embroider a reticule, she might be inclined to produce her own firescreen creation, or even, believe it, a table or two. Making baskets or weaving the seat for a chair would not be out of the question. And gentlemen were rather inclined to do this too. Reeds would not be difficult on the hands any more than horseback riding would be. That is where a pair of soft kid gloves would come in very handy.
