Bob, thank you, how interesting! And thank you for the humor, too.
About the corncobs...my parents have a camp on a lake, with no running water, so there is an outhouse (not as bad as it sounds, but we are looking forward to the bathroom my dad is putting in!) Anyway, when they bought the place, there was a little case on the wall inside the outhouse. It's about 4 inches long, with a glass front, and above it is a little tiny hammer. Inside the glass is a little corncob, with all the corn kernals gone, and a sign is above it which says "in emergency break glass". We've always just thought it was a joke, but it's even funnier now that we know the background of toilet paper!
Totally off-topic, I know, but I couldn't help myself.
