Found in C.W. and P.E. Cunnington's Dictionary of English Costume (1960): "Pregnant Stay. 1811. A corset enveloping the body from the shoulders to below the hips and elaborately boned, 'so as to compress and reduce to the shape desired the natural prominence of the female figure in a state of fruitfulness'." WB
