I misunderstood the question! I have never seen any references to powders used to keep one dry and it is my understanding that it was perfumes that were used to cover the smell of one's perspiration. I believe that the powders were reserved for the head and face. Bob Whitworth has offered a post that covers perspiration very nicely slightly above.
