In response to Jane AustEn before and after 1870..., written by The Mysterious H.C. on August 18, 1998 at 04:46:30
] Jane Austen has always had her afficionados pretty much ever since the publication of Pride and Prejudice, but she wasn't really a best-selling author or prominent literary figure before her death, and between 1817 and 1870 she wasn't widely considered one of the canonical Great Authors. It seems to have been the publication of her nephew's Memoir (a biography) that sparked more widespread interest in her. If you really want to look this up in a scholarly way, go here.
thank you. I vaguely remember a comment from Alistair Cooke about JA and Victorians...and needed the research to back it up.... Thank you.
