] Catherine Cookson is one of England's best known and best loved historical authors. She herself was born in poverty in the North of England, and she drew very heavily on her own experiences in the writing of her novels. She died two months ago.
] Actually, several of her novels have been made into movies. One of my favourites is "The Man who Cried" set in the late twenties and starring- belive it or not- Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Mr Hinds gives a first-rate performance (even though his character is nothing like Captain Wentworth), and Ms. Root is positively heartbreaking as a young widow with a business to run.
] "The Girl" is one of Ms. Cookson's oldest novels, and the one that made her famous. I've never seen the movie, though I know it has been on Canadian T.V. I'm envious, Patricia!
