I was possibly thinking about making _Emma_'s Mrs. Martin a well-concealed "natural daughter" of a wealthy gentleman who either had no other off-spring, or else whose only son had no other children and discovered after his father's death the existence of his half-sister.

Which leads to another question, how would society treat a lower class man who suddenly inherits a vast fortune? (Not my story, but one way of looking at it)--would Miss Bingley throw herself at him for his money, or would she shun him for his background?
