] By the way, it occurs to me that some of the "stays" that adult women wore in the Regency were basically similar in overall design to some of the things that were considered appropriate for a 12-year old girl to wear in the later Victorian period. I have a French drawing of 1881 (which I could scan in, but probably won't) that depicts such a "pre-corset" for a pre-adolescent girl, and it resembles a Regency illustration of a woman wearing stays that I think I may have seen on Jessamyn's page(?).
