I know this may sound sacrilegious, but I am under the impression that there have been periods of time when JA's work was not as revered as now.
I think Victorian's took a dim view of her, but I need verification or any additional information. For example, is this the early or late Victorians, (I know Trollope loved her work)?
Or was this merely a few sad-sacks who don't know a good book when they see one?
Also, if she was accepted, would any of her books been considered proper for a young lady of the 1800's, (teen age?)
