] ] I believe in the book, Rochester wants her to accept a 50 pound note as her wages. But then he gives her 10 pounds and tells her she must come back for the rest.
Yes, I noticed that and it just added to my confusion because it seemed that Rochester was carrying around a years salary as loose change in his pocket. In todays terms he was actually carrying around some 30 thousand dollars and who knows how many 50 pound notes he had in his wallet.
