Beer and ale were safer to drink than water

To L and T indexLondon's water supply was often contaminated to the point that drinking straight water was downright dangerous, and while the exact causes of disease were not yet understood, some people did suspect that water could carry disease. Beer and ale had to be brewed, and ended up containing a certain percentage of alcohol. Both of these factors would successfully kill off any disease-causing organisms in the water used.

However, OVER-indulgence in beer and ale was a health problem of another type....
