] Definitely. A good example is Princess Diana, whose father was Earl Spencer, making her Lady Diana Spencer before her marriage.
It was one of the Earl Spencers whose coat-tails caught fire, so he cut them off- creating the "Spencer" coat that was so popular in Regency times.(Well, it's a good story, whether it's true or not!!!!)
