Austen's View of Women

I was just curious. Austen obviously values intelligence and independence about women in her novels. Were her opinions shared by her contemporaries or were her novels...almost feministic? The qualities she gives Elizabeth Bennet as a heroine seem daring for her times. I would imagine most writers of her time valued heroines more like Jane Bennet. Just wondering...interested in what others either know or think...
