At work one of the things we discuss is our reasearchers opinions on why people wore so many underclothes:
It was to keep their skin contact with their clothes minnimal. So if they did sweat, or glow, they would do so on their, chemise, daycap, neckerchief, stocking, pantaletts, underskirts, . . . This way they could wash those while wearing sommething else. Especially in the 18C becuase, I think, it took one year to make one piece of clothing. (or at least that is what they say at work!)
