] I have heard of a card game that was quite popular called Whist(?). Does anyone know the rules of the game?

Someone asked this same question a few months back, or at least about what which card games were popular. I gave a summary, as I remembered, of how whist was played during the Regency. It should be in the Archives. It uses all the cards; trump is the last card turned up and is part of the dealer's hand. Play begins with the person to dealer's left. At the end of each hand the number of tricks is added up for each pair; the first six are discounted, only those afterwards are worth points. One popular variation had the Ace and Face Cards of Trump also worth a point. Sometimes people played for stakes at so-much per point difference.
I remain,
