] You are right, this Board is an escape from the Academic style, Linden. However,we are still trying to get to the bottom of things, to expand our knowledge, and to build up a bank of information that can be used by others. The Life and Times Board is different from other boards in that it is primarily a 'fact-based' board rather than an 'opinion-based' one.I don't think it's wrong to give up a little freedom and informality in order to maintain a certain standard of credibility, do you?
Yes, I do, and thank you very much for your clarification.
I shall in future give a reference when it is to hand, and indicate in other places when my belief is based on "something I think I read somewhere."
Even these vague thoughts can be better than nothing if one has no idea about a subject - someone else can always contradict them.
PS: The stuff about prostitutes came from "What Jane Austen knew and Charles Dickens ate" - he doesn't give a date, and he expresses doubt about the commonly given figure of 80,000 in London. But any book on the subject will indicate that there were lots.
