To L and T indexBanns were 'posted' in the church where the couple were to be married.If one of the couple were from a different parish, the banns were posted in the second place , too.

How the Banns were posted:
The priest makes an announcement, on three successive sundays in a row. The formal words are in the Book of Common prayer, which I don't have handy, but the gist is something like this;-

"A marriage will take place in this church on (date) between (person A) of this parish and (person B) of this (or of another) parish. If anyone knows of any reason why this marriage should not take place, speak up now. This is the first (second, third) time that this Bann is being published"

Banns are still posted by the same method today.Simple, really!
