In response to Servant ranking, written by The Mysterious H.C. on August 09, 1998 at 23:35:00
There were two hierarchies of service--formal and informal. The formal hierarchy was modelled on that of a large estate where there would be a professional group of managers--steward, groom of the chambers, huntsmen etc --as well as the household servants. The informal hierarchy depended on personal closeness to members of the family, so that nurses and personal maids ranked high though relatively low on the formal scale. An interesting parallel is the system of slavery on southern plantations, where the household servants ranked much higher than any field slave though their formal status was the same.
