Servant ranking

I don't know if there was always a strict well-defined ranking which held between all pairs of different types of servants (a "linear order", as mathematicians call it). In a large household, the "outdoors" servants (gardener, gamekeeper, etc.), the "stable" servants (groom, stableboy, etc.), and the "house" servants would have formed separate groups that might not have had all that much to do with each other in the course of their ordinary duties, except all ultimately taking orders from the top...
