The Rule of Thumb, and this question.

In response to Guidelines, written by Marie-Bernadette on August 09, 1998 at 20:05:55If any post was really out of bounds, I would delete it. I have not done any deletions on this topic, so everything you see here is okay. No-one has posted anything which I have deemed inappropriate, I promise you.
Jane Austen is a G-rated Author...her novels are sold as junior fiction, believe it or not. (And some of the nicest editions are found in the junior category!) This means that we have readers and posters who are under ten.I worry about them all the time, and I hope and pray that they have an adult looking over their shoulder when they are in Pemberley, and that that parent or teacher is aware that this is a mostly adult environment.Just when I get lulled into thinking that maybe no kids are watching, one will pipe up and prove my point.
By puting up a PG-13 rule notice I am not chastising any of the posters, I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty, and I'm not stopping a conversation. What I am doing is providing an alert for the young posters and their accompanying adults to go carefully on this particular topic.I cannot ensure that they will comply with this, of course. The decision to put up a PG-13 notice rests with the host- in this case, me. The fact that I do it only rarely is a sign that the posters on this board are a really civilised bunch. You may as well know that unacceptable posts are even rarer than PG-13 notices.....another sign that I am coping with a wonderful, civil bunch of people. Carry on with the conversation by all means, and let me worry about the kids, okay?
I do have another concern about this topic which is absolutely nothing to do with PG-13. The original question was actually about four questions, including a lot of unsubstantiated 'facts', and suppositions , a lot of sweeping statements, and was altogether confused. The responses to it were in like mode. In the space of five quite long posts, there's almost no real nugget of truth,no substantiated fact, no real exposition of the argument, no attempt to clarify the question. Barbara's new to Pemberley, and she probably needs some practice in asking questions in a manner that can be answered. We could help her by showing her how it's done....by pulling her original apart into individual questions, getting her to clarify a bit, looking at what we have got and analysing it before we put finger to keyboard. I'd really be grateful if we could all take a deep breath, and start again on this. I'd like to think that we could discuss it in a leisurely manner and all learn a bit from each other, wouldn't you? I really, really want to know more, just like the rest of you.
I hope this clarifies things a bit. I'm not really a dragon, you know ;-)And I'm not mad at anyone, either!
