To L and T index
I started musing over the information in your post and a question posed itself about the following:
] Ladies proposing to dance minuets, shall announce their intentions to the master of the ceremonies on the day preceding the ball, and shall be in the rooms appropriately dressed punctually at half-past eight o’clock.

I seem to recall an earlier thread that identified the minuet as the common dance for the opening. If that is true, then I understand the desire for the ladies to be in attendance promptly at half-past. But I find it humorous that only the ladies had to announce their intentions the night before and it was only the ladies that are instructed to be appropriately dressed and on time. THe inequity of reference conjures all sort of images!

Thanks again for posting. EL
