In response to engagements, written by Mishel on August 09, 1998 at 00:58:12
] I was just wondering, how long an engagement usually lasted from the time of 'asking' to the actual wedding day.
My impression is that the engagement would be fairly short. In any event, unless the couple had a special license, they would have to wait long enough for the banns to be called on three successive Sundays in church. (This was a provision of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753.)
Did middle to upper class people take 'honeymoons'? Where would they be most likely to go?
Weren't they called wedding journeys or something like that? I don't recall seeing the term 'honeymoon', but I could be wrong. As for where they went, I would think it would be someplace fairly close--i.e. within Britain. Perhaps the country house of a friend? Or a seaside resort?
Hope this helps, Michelle.
