In response to engagements, written by Mishel on August 09, 1998 at 00:58:12
I was just wondering, how long an engagement usually lasted from the time of 'asking' to the actual wedding day.
Probably a few weeks, maybe a few months, but it was not likely to be much longer.New clothes I assume, but anything else as compared with today's preparations?
Nothing at all as absurd as today's preparations! A women would spend years embroidering and collecting things for her trousseau so when the day came she would be fairly well prepared. I think it has long been a custom for a bride to make a wedding shirt for her man, too.
And did the groom do much preparation for it?
I'm not sure about this one.
Did middle to upper class people take 'honeymoons'? Where would they be most likely to go?
I'm not sure where they would go, but they did go on honeymoons then, but not necessarily alone. A woman would often be accompanied by her sister other female relative.
