The Sharpe books describe the life of these women vividly,Lesley.Whilst on Campaign, in the Iberian peninsular, at least, these women were the cooks, nurses,companions, and laundrymaids of the enlisted men.
For the Navy, there's a tiny bit in Diana de Marley's book( in the bib.) about hordes of women who marched accross country en masse (safety in numbers, I suppose) in order to meet their husbands' ships at a certain port.
