] Bob, I found a colour picture on one site and the cockade appears to be gold. [snip]
I'm suspect the gold colour is artistic licence. I have a description of the cockade from a book on uniforms: Robert Wilkinson-Lantham, The Royal Navy, 1790-1970 (Osprey Men-at-Arms Series #65, 1977) ISNB0-85045-248-1 includes a print (by G.A. Embleton) of Nelson at Trafalger. They both provide contrary information.
The print is accompanied by a written description which states that his hat borne too personal touches. Instead of the usual black cockade [also widely used in the British Army] he has a diamond and silver chelengk ornament presented to Nelson by the Sultan of Turkey shortly after the Battle of the Nile. The other was a green eyeshade fastened to the headband, folding down as required.
Maybe the other artist thought gold would look better than the rather greyish result of trying to represent silver and diamonds.
I remain, etc.
