No seriously--what's a ha ha? Clearly some sort of garden architecture or arrangement,but I want to know more.

I wonder how it got that name. It's really not that funny, after all... =)

Tradition has it that that's what you are supposed to say(or something far ruder) when you come accross it unexpectedly- how verifiable that statement is, I do not know!


From a note I read in my edition of Mansfield Park (maybe the same one, Kelley?) and like Kelley and Caroline say, the term ha-ha seems to come from the possible exclamation when one would come across it, since it was hidden from the scenic view. It seems a justifiable term of surprise...like if I were to say HA-HA! (in understanding or realization of something--sort of similar to AH-HA!)

It is an odd expression/term I must add...
