] . doing laundry this way was very heavy work indeed
I know I am jumping in a little late but just wanted to say that as a child (in pre-WW2 days) a lot of people had electric mangles. When I was married (in the '50's) my mother-in-law had one in her attic which she offered to me. Before the days of permanent press they were used to iron sheets and perhaps other things such as table linens. It stood up on legs at tablelike height amd had a cover that lifted over a hot cylinder and then one pressed the cover down on a folded sheet (dampened) to iron it. (My mother solved the problem of not having one by not giving us ironed sheets, a tradition keptalive by her daughter!)
